Park End Shelter
We’re bringing a historic building back to life – for the community.
Workington Town Council is proud to be restoring this currently unused, historically significant building and transforming it into a welcoming space that supports residents of all ages.
The building will be available free of charge to non-profit and voluntary organisations. Once renovated, the building will host workshops and events that benefit local people, focusing on health, sustainability, creativity, and wellbeing. We want to hear from residents about what activities they would like to see delivered here by community and voluntary organisations.
The Community Hub will focus on:
-
Health & Wellbeing – including healthy eating, nutrition, and practical support for everyday life
-
Climate Action & Sustainability – skills for greener living, reuse, repair, and environmental awareness
-
Creativity & Community – arts, crafts, learning, and social activities that bring people together

History of the building

The building has been located in Vulcan Park since 1937 when Helena Thompson donated money for an ‘Old Man’s Shelter’ to be built - named the Park End Shelter. It was intended as a reading and meeting room where men could gather to read the newspaper.
