We are delighted to announce that funding has been secured to install tennis courts in Vulcan Park.
Funding is being provided by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project, Cumberland Council and Workington Town Council; with work due to start in February 2025.
The project is part of a £30million nationwide investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people. This investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country through renovation works, and improved court accessibility with new gate-access technology and booking systems. Over 2500 courts have been completed so far as part of the project.
Park tennis courts are vital in providing opportunities for children and adults to get active, delivering significant physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits to participants. Accessible facilities in parks are particularly critical to opening up the sport to those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and women and girls.
Vulcan Park will celebrate 100 years in June 2025 and the Council is delighted to be able to bring back a modernised tennis facility to the town.
The area in which the old tennis courts used to sit has been utilised over the years with the addition of a mini tennis net, panna court and basketball hoops; this equipment will be stored until suitable alternative locations are found.
The Mayor of Workington, Cllr Neil Schofield said ‘what an exciting opportunity for the town. Many of our community still talk about the old tennis courts in the park and how they would like to see them re-instated; we are delighted that we are able to fulfil this wish for them.’
Cllr Michael Heaslip, Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee added ‘the importance of physical activity is paramount to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and positive well-being. The tennis courts will provide a much-needed facility within our town to allow people to be active but also to enjoy the social and competitive aspect of sports. We are already in contact with local clubs and coaches and we are excited for what the future holds’.
Users will be able to book the courts online or through the Workington
Town Council offices and will be operated by a coded gate system.
Full details will be released once installation is complete.
Cumberland Council Cllr Anne Quilter, portfolio holder for Vibrant and
Healthy Places added:
“Health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do and
supporting the installation of new quality facilities is an important way to
encourage our residents to get active. We are delighted to support this
project and look forward to seeing the courts being used.”
Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive, said:
“We are delighted to be working with Workington Town Council to
improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for
people to pick up a racket and get active.
“This investment from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation
will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come.
We will also be working closely with the council to ensure that the local community has a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, ensuring that we open up our sport to many more people.”
