The Mayor was joined by local poet John Hastings to raise the flag.
Pride Day has been celebrated for over 3 decades. The 28th June was chosen as a day of celebration for the LGBTQ+ community after the Stonewall riots in 1969, which took place from the 28th June, through till 3rd July.
The Stonewall riots (also referred to as the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall rebellion) were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay community in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City.
LGBT Pride events are held annually throughout the world towards the end of June to mark the Stonewall riots, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many events were cancelled in 2020, as well as this year.
